![]() ![]() The monarch butterfly is native to the Northern American tropics. Before January the butterflies don’t flutter as much due to the cold weather. The best time to see the monarch butterflies in Mexico is the latter part of January all the way to March. Once it starts cooling down in the evening, the butterflies will head back to the safety and warmth of the tree trunks so they can rest. ![]() When daylight comes, the butterflies will fly up from the trees and flutter around, because they love the warmth of the sun. There, they will stay for the winter months. Once the monarchs arrive in Mexico, they will begin to snuggle up together on the trunks of trees. The butterflies only travel during daylight and they rest and recuperate at night. As a result, the butterflies are able to conserve their energy, which allows them to travel further riding the currents. The butterflies will gain speed when they catch a warm air current and don’t have to flap their wings until the currents begin to wind down. The migration speed depends on the wind and weather conditions. Together, they travel up to one hundred and twenty miles each day. The butterflies travel in colonies of up to twenty million insects. The butterflies cozy up in the forests in the state of Michoacan, which isn’t very far from Mexico City. In the middle of November is when the monarch butterfly begins to arrive in Mexico.
